She's had SO many bangers!

Anne-Marie has made a serious name for herself in the music industry - she's got a stunning voice AND she's an incredibly talented songwriter to boot. The London-born hitmaker has featured other artists on a number of her hits over the last few years - including 'Unhealthy' with country legend Shania Twain.

With such an impressive career, it's no surprise that she's penned most of her own songs - and even a few for other artists. After the release of her EP featuring songs 'Don't Panic' and 'I Don't Like Your Boyfriend' - plus the arrival of her second baby - we've uncovered the meanings behind some of the biggest Anne-Marie songs...

2025 new music: 'Depressed'

Anne-Marie put out new song 'Depressed' on 19th September 2025 - to her own surprise! After sharing a tiny clip of it on her socials, she was overwhelmed by support from fans, who called for her to release it in its entirety.

🚨 WARNING: There's some rather explicit language in the below Instagram post 🚨

She told us in October 2025 that she'd had a different plan for it, revealing that it was originally going to be released in 2026. Watching an older video of herself teasing 'Depressed', Anne-Marie said: "I didn't expect this post to create the song coming out. You know what? I just felt like the world was needing a song about feeling rubbish."

Reading out that someone had commented on the video calling for the song to come out, she added: "I literally released the song because everyone was asking me to," before going on to divulge that the original strategy would have seen her "release stuff next year."

The song is one that a lot of people will be feel an affinity with, as the lyrics talk about putting on a front while actually you're feeling dreadful underneath it all: 'Oh, ain't it funny how I seem fine, but I'm depressed / I look so pretty, but I'm a mess / I think I'm immune to happiness, oh, why?'

Anne-Marie wrote the song after suffering with both postnatal anxiety and postnatal depression, and the lyrics are pretty relatable for mums too: 'If you ask me how I'm copin' / I'm like a minute from disaster / I got so damn good at pretendin' that I could win a BAFTA,' as well as: 'Oh, ain't it funny how I wanna be brave, I'm terrified / To get myself dressed and go outside / I say I'm okay, I'm fine, all jokes aside / If I don't laugh, I'll cry, cry, cry.'

Another collaboration with Clean Bandit and David Guetta

She got together with artists that she'd worked with previously for 2024 single 'Cry Baby' - having previously worked with Clean Bandit on 2016's 'Rockabye' and David Guetta on 'Baby Don't Hurt Me' and 'Don't Leave Me Alone'.

'Cry Baby', released on 9th August 2024, has been certified Silver in the UK with 200,000 sales, and is all about someone discovering that their boyfriend has cheated on them, but them feeling strong enough to be ok with ending the relationship.

The opening lyrics are: 'I know what you did last night / I called you up and you declined / I smell perfume, but it ain't mine / It's not okay, but it's alright.'

The chorus lyrics describe how perhaps this isn't the first time they've been cheated on, and how they've learned to be stronger this time around: 'Don't want no cry baby at my door, I let him go / Boy, I ain't the same girl I was before / You're only crying 'cause I don't want you back no more / Boy, you had your chance / And you can keep on cryin', baby.'

Anne-Marie's song with Shania Twain

Anne-Marie teamed up with country music icon Shania Twain on the single 'Unhealthy', which was released in May 2023 and reached Number 18 on the UK Singles Chart.

The country-pop song is about someone having a draw to a toxic relationship, despite knowing that it is bad for you. The song's lyrics also refers to the opinions of family and friends, who want her to leave the relationship:

'And my mother says that you're bad for me / Guess she never felt the high we're on right now / And my father says that I should run away / But he doesn't know that I just don't know how.'

Anne-Marie's song with Aitch

Anne-Marie's hit song 'Psycho' is a collaboration with rapper Aitch! Released on 9th September 2022, the track appears on her third album - and the music video has now gained over 40 MILLION views on YouTube!

The song is all about someone who is suspicious of their partner cheating on them, realises they're right but is then accused of being a "psycho" during the confrontation. The song interpolates from 90s classic 'Mambo No. 5' by Lou Bega when she lists the women's names that her partner has cheated on her with:

'You met up with Veronica late last night / You had a bit of Elena on the side / Was chattin' up Anita all last week / And now you're doin' Nina, how'd you even meet her? / Hittin' on Bianca, are you dumb? / Got with Alexandra and her mum / You're tellin' every girl they drive you mad / Yet you're callin' me the psychopath.'

Taking to Instagram in a now-deleted post, Anne-Marie thanked her fans for the track's success. She wrote: 'A dump. PSYCHO went top 5 this week after being in the charts for 11 weeks and i just wanna say thank you so much. What the hell! I love you.'

Anne-Marie and Little Mix - 'Kiss My (Uh Oh)'

Our Annie had a pretty busy 2021, releasing plenty of singles, her second album 'Therapy' AND this incredible collaboration with none other than Little Mix on 'Kiss My (Uh Oh)', which samples the classic 'Never Leave You (Uh Oh)' by Lumidee.

Released on Friday 23rd July 2021, the same day as her album, the track features Perrie Edwards, Jade Thirlwall and Leigh-Anne Pinnock who all starred in the music video together - despite Perrie and Leigh-Anne being quite heavily pregnant!

The meaning of the song is quite clear in the lyrics - it's from the perspective of a person in a relationship who always makes all the effort, and when they've finally had enough and break up with their other half, that's when they put the time in!

The first verse lyrics are: 'Got my stuff, I'm out the door / Now I'm the one you're begging for / Don't know what you got until it's gone.'

The chorus then goes: 'Why you only love me when I'm walking away? / Only ever want me when I don't want to stay / Love the feeling, hitting different / I'm not ever looking back / While I'm leaving, I see you staring / Go ahead boy, you can kiss my...'

The video, directed by Hannah Lux Davis, takes inspiration from iconic 2011 film Bridesmaids, seeing the girls on a hen do celebrating Anne-Marie with Jade taking on Melissa McCarthy's role... It's hilarious!

Anne-Marie's collaboration with Niall Horan: 'Our Song'

'Our Song' is a collaboration with none other than former One Direction star Niall Horan! After the pair had teased a song together for months, it was finally released in May 2021, and appears on Anne-Marie's second album 'Therapy'.

The song is all about two former lovers reflecting on their previous relationship, with each admitting that while they're over each other, they are often reminded of the other person. Lyrics include: 'I've been waking up alone / I haven't thought of her for days / I'll be honest / It's better off this way.'

The chorus lyrics are: 'Just when I think you're gone / Hear our song on the radio / Just like that, takes me back / To the places we used to go / And I've been trying but I just can't fight it / When I hear it, I just can't stop smiling...'

The pair also collaborated on a charity single which was a cover of the Fleetwood Mac song 'Everywhere', released in November 2021 - with the song also featuring Ed Sheeran on guitar!

The pair also have an unreleased collaboration that they wrote at the same time as 'Our Song', as Anne-Marie told us in October 2025 that it had 60s vibes, before addressing the camera and asking Niall whether they should release it! Do it!

Anne-Marie's collaboration on 'Don't Play'

In January 2021, Anne-Marie collaborated with KSI and Digital Farm Animals on track 'Don't Play', which went to Number 2 in the UK and was certified Gold. KSI said of working with Anne-Marie: "I was just gassed man. I heard the song and thought, 'Anne-Marie has absolutely made this a hit'. It was a good song but she made it insane. I was so gassed."

The track features additional songwriting from Sam Gumbley AKA S-X... AKA KSI's Celebrity Gogglebox sofa buddy! The song is about a relationship turned sour, with the lyrics explaining how two people had initially been close before one began 'ghosting' the other: 'But now you've just gone missin'... / ...You're online, but still won't listen.'

Anne-Marie and KSI's hit peaked at Number 2 in the UK, and has even been certified Platinum - with the pair later performing their hit single at The BRIT Awards 2022.

What is 'Problems' about?

The song is about a relationship in which two people seem to be utterly dependent on each other - bordering on toxic. It includes lyrics like: 'I think being in love with you is bad for my health', and: 'Yeah, I know today I called you like a hundred times, but / Yesterday you called me like a hundred and five.'

Her single 'Problems' was released on Thursday 12th November 2020 - the same day as her documentary 'How To Be Anne-Marie' was released! The track didn't chart, and is a non-album single as it does not appear on Anne-Marie's upcoming second album 'Therapy'.

Anne-Marie - 'To Be Young' featuring Doja Cat

Anne-Marie's song 'To Be Young' features Doja Cat! The single, released on 16th July 2020, is all about enjoying the here and now instead of putting too much stock into planning for the future. Lyrics include: 'They tell me I should make a plan for life / All I'm thinking bout is what to do tonight.'

Anne-Marie told us all about how the collaboration came about in July 2020, saying: "I basically wrote this song in October and I left a space there for someone to be on and I didn't know who it was going to be. We kind of just left it open, and it wasn't until lockdown happened and she heard the song and she just said 'I want to be on it'.

"The next day she wrote her verse and recorded it and sent it back, and I remember being in the car and listening to it for the first time and I just had goosebumps all over my body, and I was just like, 'This is perfect.' It was amazing, I think she's so great."

What is Anne-Marie's song 'Birthday' about?

After completely overhauling her look with a total pink theme in 2020, Anne-Marie released her single 'Birthday' in February 2020. The song is about moving on from the past and bad situations.

The lyrics to the first verse are: 'I'm another year older / I won't cry about you anymore / Told my friends to come over / To dye my hair, mm / It's not even the weekend / And I'm wearin' that dress I can't afford / Givin' life a new meanin' / Without you there.'

It may have only peaked at Number 31 in the UK charts, but the song was still a huge hits with fans - even being certified Gold by the BPI in May 2025, with 400,000 UK sales!

Anne-Marie's song 'Lonely' featuring Lauv

Anne-Marie's only release in 2019 was 'Lonely', featuring Lauv. Lauv explained the song, saying it's about "missing someone you used to hook up with", adding: "I never really like admitting that I miss someone after a break up. So here's a song that does it for me."

The song appeared on the soundtrack for the third season of Netflix's 13 Reasons Why, and also appeared on Lauv's debut album 'How I'm Feeling', released in March 2020. The lyrics to one of the verses are: 'Yeah, I still watch the shows you showed me / I still drink that wine / But these days it tastes more bitter than sweet, hmm / And all my friends are way too drunk to save me from my phone / So sorry if I say some things I mean.'

Anne-Marie on 'Rewrite The Stars' with James Arthur

Anne-Marie appeared on 'Rewrite The Stars' alongside James Arthur for 'The Greatest Showman: Reimagined' album. The song was originally performed by Zendaya and Zac Efron in the film, and the new album featured pop stars giving their takes on the tracks.

The song appears in the film when two characters from very different backgrounds are discussing whether they could ignore the social issues surrounding their relationships and be together anyway. Anne-Marie and James also recreated part of the film in the music video.

The lyrics to the chorus are: 'What if we rewrite the stars? / Say you were made to be mine / Nothing could keep us apart / You'd be the one I was meant to find / It's up to you, and it's up to me / No one can say what we get to be / So why don't we rewrite the stars? / Maybe the world could be ours tonight.'

Anne-Marie's song 'Perfect To Me'

Anne-Marie has long been known for her body positivity, and for being a fantastic role model when it comes to self-love and accepting yourself. She released track 'Perfect To Me' - originally just called 'Perfect' - in November 2018.

The chorus lyrics are: 'Don't feel like putting makeup on my cheeks / Do what I wanna / Love every single part of my body / Top to the bottom / I'm not a supermodel from a magazine / I'm okay with not being perfect / 'Cause that's perfect to me.'

She spoke about being a role model, saying that she'd give her younger self the advice to "not worry" so much.

She said: "I used to worry about everything possible. I used to worry what people would think of me, what I look like," adding that she looked up to Christina Aguilera, Lauryn Hill and P!nk when she was younger.

Did Anne-Marie sing on 'Don't Leave Me Alone' by David Guetta?

She sure did! The song came out in July 2018, and was a single from French DJ David Guetta's album, '7', as well as appearing on the deluxe version of Anne-Marie's debut album, 'Speak Your Mind'.

The song is all about a couple talking about how much they mean to each other, and how they wouldn't be able to cope if they split up or weren't together anymore. The verse lyrics are: 'I don't know if I would be alive today / With or without you like night and day / Read and repeat every conversation / Being with you, everyday's a Saturday / But every Sunday you've got me praying.'

The chorus goes: 'Don't you ever leave me, don't you ever go / I've seen it on TV, I know how it goes / Even when you're angry, even when I'm cold / Don't you ever leave me, don't leave me alone.'

Anne-Marie '2002': Behind the lyrics

Anne-Marie had a huge hit in 2018 with the single '2002', co-written by her friend Ed Sheeran. People have been loving the lyrics to the chorus as they reference plenty of noughties' pop hits. It was such a big bop that in June 2024, it was certified 4x Platinum by the BPI with 2.4 million UK sales!

'Oops I got ninety-nine problems singing bye, bye, bye/Hold up, if you wanna go and take a ride with me/Better hit me, baby, one more time.'

In just those three lines, Anne-Marie covers Britney Spears' 'Oops... I Did It Again', '99 Problems' by Jay-Z, *NSYNC's 'Bye Bye Bye', 'Ride Wit Me' by Nelly, and another Britney classic in the form of '... Baby One More Time'.

What is 'FRIENDS' by Anne-Marie about?

Anne-Marie's song 'FRIENDS' with DJ Marshmello is about how one of the singer's friends has developed romantic feelings for her, but she's not interested as they've been friends since childhood. The lyrics for the first verse are: 'You say you love me, I say you crazy / We're nothing more than friends / You're not my lover, more like a brother / I known you since we were like ten.'

The chorus lyrics are: 'Haven't I made it obvious? / Haven't I made it clear? / Want me to spell it out for you? / F-R-I-E-N-D-S.'

Anne-Marie told Harpers Bazaar: "I think it's quite a funny subject. It might be a bit awkward for some people who are actually being put in the friend zone. I just try and write songs that I haven't really heard a lot. I haven't really heard that many songs about that kind of subject.

"To be honest, I've kind of just told people that if they need to give anyone more of a hint, then just send them this song now."

Peaking at Number 4 in the UK, the track spent 16 weeks in the Top 40 and was certified 3x Platinum in May 2025 with 1.8 million UK sales.

What is Anne-Marie's song 'Ciao Adios' about?

Hot off the back of her success on 'Rockabye', Anne-Marie released 'Ciao Adios' in November 2016, appearing on her debut album 'Speak Your Mind'. The song reached Number 9 in the UK, her first Top 10 UK hit as a solo artist, and has been certified 2x Platinum.

The song is all about discovering that a partner is cheating, and instead of wasting any more time on the relationship, saying 'goodbye' to it. Ciao and Adios both mean 'goodbye' in Italian and Spanish respectively.

The chorus lyrics are: 'I'm onto you, yeah you / I'm not your number one / I saw you, with her / Kissing and having fun / If you're giving all of your money and time / I'm not gonna sit here wasting mine on you, yeah, you / Ciao adios, I'm done.'

Anne-Marie on 'Rockabye' by Clean Bandit with Sean Paul

Although Anne-Marie was already starting to appear on people's radars after 'Alarm', it was her appearance on 'Rockabye' by Clean Bandit with Sean Paul that really shot her to fame. The song was released in October 2016 and spent a whopping nine weeks at Number 1, and won the coveted Christmas Number 1 spot in 2016. It was also Anne-Marie's first Number 1, and has been certified an incredible 4x Platinum in the UK.

The song was written by Anne-Marie with Ina Wroldsen, who was originally meant to appear on the single but was swapped for Anne-Marie. Ina wrote the lyrics about her son, and the song tells the story of a single mother working all the hours under the sun to provide for her child.

The chorus lyrics are: 'She tells him "ooh love" / No one's ever gonna hurt you, love I'm gonna give you all of my love / Nobody matters like you / She tells him "your life ain't gonna be nothing like my life / You're gonna grow and have a good life / I'm gonna do what I've got to do".'

What is 'Alarm' by Anne-Marie about?

Anne-Marie's song 'Alarm' is about the singer realising that her partner is cheating on her with another woman. The lyrics to the chorus are: 'And there goes the alarm ringing in my head/Like somebody said, "don't you trust him, no" / Texting from his ex, what did you expect?/Now you're lying here knowing where he goes...'

She also released a music video for the track, which was loosely inspired by the Romeo and Juliet film adaptation by Baz Luhrmann in 1996. It peaked at Number 16 in the UK and has also been certified Platinum.

What do the lyrics to Anne-Marie's 'Do It Right' mean?

Er... We're pretty sure you'll be able to work it out for yourself! The song is all about falling totally in lust with someone, and being very physically compatible. The second verse lyrics are: 'I remember when we went dancing, non-stop laughing / He's so charming, oh, oh / And we were like up 'til morning, heart's are pouring / And I adore him, yeah, yeah.'

Additionally, the bridge goes: 'The only thing on my mind, all the time, no appetite / Always wanna bite, just my type, this one's mine / And there's never been a human being so good for me, oh.'

The track was released in November 2015, and peaked at Number 22 in Australia as well as receiving a Gold certification in the country. It didn't appear on an album or EP.

What is 'Rumour Mill' about?

Anne-Marie worked with Rudimental on their track 'Rumour Mill', along with fellow British singer Will Heard. It was released in August 2015 and featured on the band's second album 'We the Generation'.

The song itself is all about a relationship being affected by gossip, and trying to ignore what's being said. The lyrics to the one of the verses are: 'It's on a rumour mill, word is on the street, I / I love you so, the feeling's bitter sweet, I / How do you like me now? I'm at the crossroad you can't reach I / Don't test me now, 'cause it's a test that you can't teach.'

What was Anne-Marie's first song?

Anne-Marie's first ever single was 'Karate' - named for her favourite sport. It's no surprise that she wrote a song about the discipline - she herself is a black belt in the martial art form, having taken lessons since the age of nine, and has even won gold and silver medals in world championships.

The song was released in 2015, and the lyrics encourage a partner to open up fully in a relationship. The chorus lyrics are: 'Work hard on me / Like karate / Cause your body is what I need / So work with me / Be a part of me / Like I want you to be / Like karate.'

The music video features Anne-Marie performing some karate moves, and also karate-inspired dance moves. Although it didn't chart in the UK, it did appear on her EP 'Karate', released in July 2015.

The song also incorporates samples from the Street Fighter game, in which characters compete in a martial arts tournament. The bridge lyrics also include counting in Japanese: 'Ichi, ni, san, shi,' which translates to one, two, three, four.

Who else has Anne-Marie written songs for?

Anne-Marie has written with singer MNEK - she has a songwriting credit on 'Colour' featuring Hailee Steinfeld, which appeared on MNEK's 2018 album 'Language'. She also wrote on 'We Got Love' by Sigala featuring Ella Henderson in 2019 and 'I Love Me' by Demi Lovato in 2020.
